The International Foundation in Art & Design (IFAD) is a pathway qualification that precedes an international undergraduate degree in Art & Design. This course trains students in essential study skills related to Art & Design education and academic English.

Qualification Details

The IFAD provides opportunities for students to develop the creative and conceptual skills and understanding required in today’s creative industries and the continuously changing global environment. IFAD is a course offered to students aspiring to progress to an Art & Design related undergraduate degree in an English-speaking country. This course is a progression pathway approved and recognised by all of the Academy of Creative Education’s partner institutions. Study centres that provide ACE standardised IFAD curriculums train students in creative thinking, technical skills, material recognition and English language abilities.

The International Foundation in Art & Design is a one-year curriculum designed specifically for students who wish to progress to a bachelor’s degree course in the UK, or other western countries, in one of the art and design disciplines. Designed by academics with extensive experience in international art and design education, it focuses on enabling students from Chinese educational backgrounds to develop the confidence and ability to take control of their own academic development and creative direction. It, therefore, differs from portfolio preparation programmes by concentrating on developing creative and intellectual capabilities and fostering a spirit of inquiry and analytical and critical thinking to ensure that students arrive at their destination fully equipped to actively and effectively participate in learning. This course will simultaneously train students in fundamental skills for higher education level art and design study, and it will develop their English comprehension. This curriculum will incorporate a range of teaching methods and learning opportunities, such as lectures, seminars, workshops, student presentations, one-on-one tutorials, visiting artists/lecturers, etc.

The typical entry requirement is that you must be at least 17 years old and have completed 12 years of school education and passed our IFAD Admission Test. Proof of English language abilities have to be presented. Different countries are varied, please refer to the entry requirement from the study centre you chose.

Our students go on to study art and design at degree level and then on to careers across a wide range of disciplines. On completion of this qualification, students will be able to progress to the first year of a 3-year degree course or second year direct entry of a 4-year degree course in one of our partner institutions.
