Practice-based Research Degree

The International Pre-Doctorate in Art & Design (IPDAD) is a pathway qualification designed for students who have successfully completed their undergraduate or master’s level qualifications and are looking to progress to doctorate level studies internationally. This qualification trains students in research methods, academic writing and critical reflection in academic practice.

Qualification Details

The International Pre-Doctorate in Art & Design is a programme designed for students who have completed their undergraduate or master’s qualifications and wish to progress to doctoral studies internationally. The programme comprises three modules that focus on research methods, academic writing, and critical reflection in academic practice. The International Pre-Doctorate in Art and Design (IPDAD) equips students with the skills and knowledge needed for a practice-based PhD or DProf degree in Art and Design disciplines in the UK or other English-speaking countries.

Upon successful completion of the three modules, students will work with a senior mentor to develop a research proposal in their chosen research field. This will enable them to embark on a practice-based doctoral programme. Students who complete this qualification will be eligible to progress to one of our partner institutions to undertake a practice-based PhD or DProf degree in Art and Design.

The programme provides an opportunity for aspiring doctors of Art & Design to gain practical experience with research methods and develop the necessary academic writing and critical thinking skills to pursue their doctoral studies. With our expert guidance, students can develop their research interests, refine their research proposal, and prepare for doctoral studies in the field of Art and Design.

Module 1: Understanding Research, Methodology, and Practice-led PhDs

In this module, students will learn about what is expected of them when undertaking a PhD, both generally and specifically, and understand the differences between a fully textual PhD and a practice-led PhD as offered in the UK. Through discussion with the module leader and peers, students will explore appropriate research within doctoral studies and the different research methods that can complement practice-led modes of research. Students will begin to write their initial ideas for potential doctoral research, with guidance on how to investigate this topic as a starting point, and learn about the key terms, milestones, and how to learn from criticism. The module will also cover the different approaches for combining practice and academic study, framing this within an understanding of what the research degree entails. By the end of the module, students will have a clear understanding of the research, methodology, and practice-led PhDs, as well as the necessary tools and techniques to develop a research proposal.

Module 2: The University, the Research Environment and Self-initiated Study

This module aims to provide students with a broader understanding of the contexts and achievements in a PhD. Students will self-assess their personal skills and abilities in the context of completing a PhD and explore what might be appropriate as a sample research plan for study across 36-48 months of PhD work through discussion with the module leader and peers. The module covers the place of ethics and research integrity and what responsibilities are for the supervisor, the university, and the student’s self-initiated study. Students will learn how to make the best use of what may be on offer and understand the different approaches for combining practice and academic study. Additionally, students will refine a personal academic CV appropriate for use in PhD applications.

Module 3: Preparing a Research Proposal and Completing a Research Degree

In this module, students will learn about the full responsibilities and implicit contractual arrangements involved in conducting a PhD research degree in the UK, whether fully textual or practice-led. They will be able to articulate their personal goals and prepare an actual doctoral proposal, setting out goals, aims, intentions and a case for study. The module will guide students to provide a complete academic CV in support of their application and to propose the potential impact of their research, as well as funding arrangements. This module will provide the necessary skills and knowledge to complete a research degree and to pursue a career in research in the field of art and design.

To be eligible for the International Pre-Doctorate in Art & Design programme, applicants should have successfully completed an undergraduate or master’s level qualification in a relevant field of study and have a strong interest in pursuing practice-based PhD or DProf degrees in art and design. They should also demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the English language, as the programme is taught in English. In addition, applicants are expected to provide a statement of purpose, and a portfolio of their previous work to support their application.

Students who successfully complete the International Pre-Doctorate in Art and Design programme progress to one of the programme’s international partner institutions to undertake a practice-based PhD or DProf degree in Art and Design. The programme’s three modules provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge for a practice-based doctoral programme and equip them with research methods, academic writing, and critical reflection in academic practice.

This qualification is a distance learning programme, and delivered by ACE Central Distance Learning Centre (CDLC).
